#7 - Some Things Never Change

May’s print sale is coming to a close, and I wanted to end it off with the story behind one of my favorite images. In 2017 I was fortunate enough to land a gig traveling from Seoul to Vladivostok to shoot a series of lookbooks for Korean menswear brand Beslow. Our crew of four hopped a ferry from Korea’s Donghae port and traveled north through the night. The morning welcomed us to Russia.

It was my second time making this journey. The first time had happened several years prior, at which point I was not a working photographer, I was in a difficult relationship, and I was working a job that I didn’t believe in. That first trip I’d ended up at a beach dotted with broken concrete and pipes, and I was eager to get back there to shoot one of the lookbooks. I took the crew through and we shot for several hours on a chilly and overcast day. As we made our way around the cove, my breath was taken away by the sight of a man standing on a concrete outpost in the middle of the bay, diving into the water. On the first trip I had seen this man too, on the same outpost, in the same swimsuit, diving into the same freezing water.

I called for a five minute break, and as the others moved up the beach, I sat there watching him jump, circle, and jump again. Seeing him brought into focus the amount that had changed for me in those few years, and it reminded me that some things remain consistent throughout.

I have an A3 and an A3+ of the 2017 image available in the store until the end of May (which at the time of writing this is a little over a day away). If you want to see the full Super 8mm video lookbook that I shot, you can go here!
